Louella M. Johnson, age 89, of Watertown, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the Elim Home in Watertown.
She was born Oct. 28, 1922, in Osage City, KS, the daughter of Arthur and Hannah (Beckman) Sutherland.
Louella was united in marriage to Harry C. Johnson Oct. 16, 1943, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Buffalo.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Louella’s faithfulness to the Lord, her family and community was a top priority in her life. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she and Harry would try to take in all of their activities whenever possible.
Louella was involved in the church in many ways throughout her life which included: teaching Sunday school, playing the piano at church services, being part of the Ladies Aid, Bible study leader, and she also sang in the church choir. She was a very hospitable people, lending a hand or cooking a meal to anyone in need.
Louella kept very busy quilting, sewing, and baking her famous apple pie and Swedish rice pudding. She had a great sense of humor, seeing the best in any situation.
During World War II, Louella was part of Rosie the Riveter. She was the first Strawberry Queen of Howard Lake; an event in the 1940s which evolved into present-day Good Neighbor Days in Howard Lake.
Louella was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Hannah Sutherland; sisters Audrey Strandquist and Novia Strandquist; sister-in-law Ruthie Johnson; brother-in-law Willard Strandquist; and father-in-law and mother-in-law Rudolph and Gerda Johnson.
She is survived by her loving family: husband Harry; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Gordon Lund of Dassel, Renee and Elwin Bauer of Mayer, and Nancy and David Schrupp of Watertown; grandchildren Britta and Craig Aycock, Peter and Susan Lund, Karna and Dr. Jimmy Ching, Sonja and Tod Bocken, Joel and Katie Lund, Jamie and Jim Steinle, Jason and Amy Bauer, Cole Schrupp, Matthew Schrupp, and Erin Schrupp; and great-grandchildren Victoria, Lara and Gannon Aycock, Anders, Christian, Ana Grace and Lars Ching, Hannah, Kayle and Chase Bocken, Gavyn, Brynn and Natalia Lund, Allison and Jacob Steinle, Bryce Kallenbach, and Jenna and Meah Bauer.
Louella is further survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Joyce and Doug Erickson of New Hope, Wallace Strandquist of Montrose, Hjelton Johnson of Golden Valley; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Friday, May 11 at 3 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Watertown with the Rev. Paul Kling officiating. Interment was in the Watertown Public Cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday, May 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church, and continued Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Louella’s grandchildren were her casket bearers.
