Gladys Herding Jorgenson, age 79, formerly of Watertown, MN, died Monday, June 11, 2012, at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD.
She was born Aug. 5, 1932, to Hagen and Mary (Wilkins) Herding on a farm near Troy, SD. Gladys grew up in Watertown, SD, and graduated from high school there in 1949.
Gladys was a candy striper until her marriage to Carrol L. Jorgenson Oct. 2, 1960, in Watertown, SD.
The couple moved to Watertown, MN in 1966, where Gladys was employed by Tonka Toys. She was also employed by the Chuck Wagon Cafe as a cook, and later by Elim Nursing Home in Watertown, MN.
In the 1990s the couple moved back to Watertown, SD. Carrol passed away March 14, 2004.
Gladys enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, flower gardening, and reading, and was a big fan of Elvis.
She is survived by her son, Gary and wife, Laurie of Sioux Falls, SD; her daughter, Pauline and husband, Harlan Hecksel of Winsted; her siblings, Bennie (Beatrice) Herding of Sioux Falls, SD, and Viola Engels of Watertown, SD; many nieces and nephews; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Carrol, Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Hiko, Alvin, and an infant baby brother; and her sisters, Katie, Anna, Grace, Della and Margaret.
Funeral services took place Friday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD.
Visitation was Thursday, June 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel in Watertown, SD.
Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters, Trish Hirsch, Amy Hecksel. and Brandi David.
Pallbearers were Troy Hecksel, Matt Parish, Matt David, Jeremy Hirsch, Matt Littfin, and Dave Taylor.
