Alvin H. Kalvig, 80

Alvin Henry Kalvig, age 80, of Blackduck, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

He was born in Thompson, IA, the son of Elmer and Elma (Asbe) Kalvig.

Al graduated from high school in 1950 in Kanawha, IA.

He enlisted with the US Navy in 1951, and served aboard the USS Estoria and USS Balduck in the Pacific during the Korean Conflict.

Upon military discharge, Al then attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, IA, graduating in 1957 with a degree in business.

Al married Doris Gethmann Feb. 14, 1959, in Kanawha, IA. He worked several jobs in Iowa and then, in 1972, he and his wife purchased the Hide Out Resort in Pennington, MN. They sold the resort in 1978.

In 1974, Al began an accounting and tax practice in Blackduck, operating under the name Kalvig & Associates. He sold his business to his son, Dwight, in 1994.

Al formally retired in 1998, moving to Arizona City, AZ. He resided in Arizona until his health forced him to return to Blackduck in 2004.

Al was diagnosed with dementia/Alzheimer’s in 2005. He managed to live independently until moving to the Good Samaritan Society, Blackduck in 2010, and had recently moved to Lighthouse, a memory care unit, in Waconia.

Al enjoyed the game of baseball and was active in coaching both of his sons in Little League. He was an avid and passionate golfer, enjoying the game as often as possible.

Al was baptized and raised Lutheran, was an elder in the Presbyterian church in Blackduck, served on the council at Sonland Lutheran Church while residing in Arizona, and became a member at Faith Lutheran Church in Blackduck in 2009.

He was a member of the Blackduck American Legion Post 372.

Any time that Al could spend with his grandchildren was always cherished. He loved his four children and was proud of their careers and accomplishments.

He rarely complained or expressed any regrets over his health, accepted his situation and made the best of what life offered. Al always felt blessed by God and he thanked Him every day.

Al is survived by his children, Dwight (Sandy) Kalvig of Blackduck, Dawn Kalvig of Winsted, Elizabeth Carol of Virginia, and Kenneth (Rhonda) Kalvig of Kalispell, MT; seven grandchildren, Kathryn Kalvig, Emilie Kalvig, April Thompson, Ashtyn Thompson, Allison Kalvig, Olivia Kalvig, and Erik Kalvig; two sisters, Deloris Harrenstein of Dubuque, IA, and Elaine Hegland of Ames, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
