Bernice M. Marohn, 75

Bernice Mary Marohn, age 75, of Annandale, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at Sunrise Cottages, Buffalo.

She was born Oct. 19, 1936, to Leo and Helen (Flatoff) Zurawski in Stevens Point, WI. Bernice was baptized Oct. 25, 1936, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

She graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School, Stevens Point, in 1954; then later in life earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State University.

Bernice married Marvin Marohn Dec. 31, 1955, and they resided in Annandale, where she worked with Marv in his produce business and later in the grocery business. She helped build Marv’s Red Owl from the ground up, beginning with mixing the cement for the building, and worked in the produce, and health and beauty departments, or wherever she was needed.

Bernice had a heart for homeless animals and did foster care for many kittens and puppies.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Annandale, where she was confirmed Sept. 25, 1956, was a member of the choir, and taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

In 2005, Bernice and Marv received the Minneapolis Aquatennial Commodore’s Award for their volunteerism and contributions to the community.

Bernice had a strong faith in her Savior and passed that on to her greatest treasure, her family. Her children and grandchildren were truly her delight and joy.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin of Annandale; children and their spouses, Julie and Ronald Starke, Robert and Valerie Marohn, all of Annandale, and Matthew and Vicki Marohn of Maple Lake; grandchildren Michael and Jill Starke, Madilyn and Tanner Marohn, and Holly and Maxwell Marohn; sisters-in-law Nora Bell of Wayzata, and Audrey “Peachy” and Lou Zurawski of Stevens Point; and brother-in-law Lawrence Calderone of Eagle River, AK.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters Theodore and Leonard Zurawski, Esther Orr, Irene Krasavage, and Emily Calderone; and brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Marcus and Viva Strohschein, Duane Bell, Casimir Krasavage, and Herbert Orr.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Annandale with the Rev. Thomas Queck officiating. Music was provided by Diane Johnson, organist; and Laura Thurk, soloist. Interment followed at Pleasantview Cemetery in Annandale.

Visitation was Friday, Aug 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and continued Saturday one hour prior to the services.

Pallbearers were Jonathan and David Strohschein, Scott Douglas, and Michael Starke. Honorary pallbearers were Jill Starke, Madilyn, Tanner, Holly and Maxwell Marohn, and Steven Orr.
