Eugene S. “Gene” O’Brien, age 88, of Rockford, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at The Golden LivingCenter in Delano.
He was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Minneapolis, the son of Shelby J. and Maude K. Henning O’Brien.
Gene honorably served his country in the United States Army.
Eugene was joined in holy marriage with Eunice E. Pyykola Aug. 12, 1950, at Rosedale Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.
Gene formerly had a milk route, worked at Bridgeman’s, where he made ice cream; and in maintenance at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening.
Gene was a faithful member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford.
He also belonged to the Delano American Legion Post.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Eunice E. O’Brien; a sister, Ellen Blais of Crystal; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Jerome, and Shelby John O’Brien.
Funeral services took place Monday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford with the Rev. Michael Barlow officiating. Interment with military rites followed at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Crystal.
Visitation was at the church Monday, beginning at 1 p.m.
Casket bearers for Monday were Jim Swanson, Craig O’Brien, Scott O’Brien, Keith O’Brien, Nicholas O’Brien, and Doreen O’Brien.
Casket bearers for Tuesday were Mark Ennen, Craig O’Brien, Daryl O’Brien, Scott O’Brien, Nicholas O’Brien, and Keith O’Brien.
