Eugene “Gene” Clinton Olson, age 83, of Rochester, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at Madonna Towers in Rochester.
He was born Nov. 12, 1928, in Minneapolis, the son of Harry and Myrtle Olson. Raised in Minneapolis, he was a graduate of Minnehaha Academy in 1947.
Gene then enlisted in the Navy Reserves, and attended Dunwoody Institute.
He married Phyllis Ostlund Aug. 11, 1950, in Minneapolis.
Gene owned and operated a TV and electronics store in Howard Lake. He then worked in service and sales for Magnavox for a number of years.He continued in sales in various capacities, and he and his wife moved to Rochester.
Following retirement, he drove a school bus for the Oronoco route of the Rochester public schools. With his wife, he operated a crafts business, traveling and working craft shows until 1998.
Gene was a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Olson of Rochester; two sons, Gene (Christine) Olson of Delafield, WI, and Gerry Olson of Rosemount; four grandchildren, Jessica (Jeremy) Runte, Samantha Olson, Cassandra Olson, and Devin Olson; three great-grandchildren, Joseph, Julia, and Joshua Runte; a sister, Harriet (Richard) Anderson of Cambridge; a brother, Sanford Olson, also of Cambridge; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Manning of Hastings.
Gene was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Olson.
A memorial service took place Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester with the Rev. Shelley Cunningham officiating. Ennichement of the urn in the church columbarium followed the service.
Visitation was Monday, Jan. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Rochester Chapel.
