John “Jack” Reinert, age 88, of Waverly, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2012, of a massive stroke.
He was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Hammond, IN. Jack moved to Waverly at the age of 5 and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School for 12 years, graduating in 1941.
After graduation, Jack continued to dairy and crop farm. He excelled in the game of baseball and remained active in the sport into his 50s. He was inducted into the North Star League Hall of Fame June 13, 1999.
Jack was joined in holy matrimony to Elizabeth “Bette” Lorraine Stifter, also of Waverly, April 10, 1951. They remained in Waverly and were blessed with 61 years of marriage and six children: Ken (Wanda), Michael (Patricia), Joan (John) Sandquist, George (Patty), Greg “Bean” (Linda) and Susan Reinert (Christian); 18 grandchildren: Nathan and Phillip Schmidt; Nicole Martin, Megan Sawatzke, Blake Peterson, Katie Reinert and Thom Reinert; Drew and Ryan Sandquist; Sara Varner, Chris Reinert, Jill, Liz and Abby Reinert; Eric, Holly Joe and Lily Reinert; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Jack also worked at Padden’s Mobil Station in Waverly until he joined the Ironworker’s Local 512 and began his career as an ironworker. He retired in 1988, but remained passionate in his craft; devoted to excellence in his ironwork until he died.
Jack also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a charter member of the Waverly Gun Club. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed following his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, Jack is survived by a brother, Philip “Dan” (Sally) Reinert; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Reinert and Evangeline Powell; and a daughter-in-law, Deb Reinert.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, followed by private interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Wednesday, July 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.; and continued Thursday, one hour prior to Mass.
Casket bearers were Jack’s grandsons: Nathan Schmidt, Phillip Schmidt, Thom Reinert, Drew Sandquist, Ryan Sandquist, Chris Reinert, Eric Reinert, and Joe Reinert.
