Mavis E. Scheer Obituary – 12/26/2012


Mavis Eleanor (Wackler) Scheer, age 85, of Howard Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

She was born March 13, 1927, in Middleville Township, rural Howard Lake, the daughter of Edmond and Francis (Stoppelmann) Wackler. Mavis was baptized April 17, 1927, by the Rev. C.G. Seltz at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake; and confirmed in her faith May 5, 1940, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Middleville Township, by the Rev. W.D. Kanning.

She attended grade school at the Highland Country School and the Bethlehem Lutheran School, graduating from the Howard Lake High School in May 1945.

Mavis was married to Gaylin L. Scheer Sept. 25, 1947, at St. James Lutheran Church, with her brother, the Rev. Myron E. Wackler officiating. Their marriage was blessed with two children.

Mavis’ career kept her close to home, being employed first at Carlson’s Five and Dime, then at the Howard Lake Drug Store, and in more recent years, at the Howard Lake Liquor Store. She was also a partner with Gaylin in owning and operating the “Scheer Popcorn Wagon” for 40 years on a street corner in Howard Lake, at the Wright County Fair, and at many local baseball and softball games. They even traveled to neighboring towns with their popcorn wagon for special events and games.

As a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Mavis served at funerals and dinners.

She loved to dance polkas, and enjoyed watching baseball and basketball games. Spending time with her family was always important to her.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylin L. Scheer; daughter Roxanne G. Scheer; a sister, Carol Walden; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine M. Weber.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Reed and Gloria Scheer; three grandchildren, Kathy (Scheer) and Everett Kramer, Patty (Scheer) and Terry Haugen, and Timothy and Amanda Scheer; and four great-grandchildren, Michael Kramer, Alex Haugen, Jaxen Haugen, and Cole Haugen.

Mavis is further survived by her godson, Steve Weber and his wife, Bonnie; eight siblings, Myron Wackler of Coeur d’Alene, ID, John (Dorothy) Wackler of Ardmore, OK, Herald (Dianna) of Haysville, NC, Ila Mae (Wackler) Hengel of New London, Jim (Carolyn) Wackler of Howard Lake, Darlene (Wackler) Newman of Apple Valley, Mike Wackler of Fridley, and Robert Wackler of Howard Lake; nieces; nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Saturday, Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Rev. Michael Nirva officiating. Nancy Butterfass served as the organist. Interment was at St. James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.

Pallbearers were Timothy Scheer, Michael Kramer, Alex Haugen, Everett Kramer, Steve Weber, and Robert Wackler.

Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake.
