Thomas William Schmitt, age 77, of Winsted, died Dec. 11, 2012, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
He was born Feb. 9, 1935, in Boone, IA, the son of Anton and Mary Elizabeth (Swanton) Schmitt.
Thomas married Kathryn Caven Dec. 28, 1964, at St. Olaf Church in Minneapolis. Their marriage was blessed with three children.
Thomas worked as a k-12 art teacher early in his life. He was a kind, gentle, and accepting man, who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed reading, especially science fiction books; playing computer games, researching his family tree, and going on walks. He also enjoyed watching the birds in nature. Above all, Thomas was fond of spending time with his many grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathryn; children Martin (Jennifer) Schmitt of St. Louis, MO, Kristine (Joseph) Halloran of St. Paul, and Karla (Robert) Reber of Bloomington; grandchildren Emma Schmitt, Sam, Mara, and Thomas Halloran; and Adam and Owen Reber; and other family and friends.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gordon Charles; and a sister, Mary Pat.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10:30 a.m at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with Father Paul Schumacher as the celebrant. Interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Visitation was Friday, Dec. 14 at Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted from 5 to 8 p.m., with parish prayers at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials are preferred to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
