Ruth M. Shrack Obituary – 1/2/2012


Ruth M. Shrack, age 102, of Redkey, IN, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, while in the company of family members, at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Muncie, Muncie, IN.

Ruth was born Sept. 15, 1909, in Dunkirk, IN, a daughter of the late Emma Belle (Maitlen) Michael and Simon Michael.

She was a 1927 graduate of Dunkirk High School.

Ruth was the widow of William Harvey Shrack.

She attended Sugar Grove United Methodist Church in Redkey, IN, where she played piano for 75 years. She also played piano for the silent movies at the Dunkirk Theater.

A homemaker and farmers wife, Ruth belonged to Jay County Extension Club (president 1970-1972), Merry Mixers Extension Club, Jay County Farm Bureau, Family Circle, and UMW of Sugar Grove Church.

She had traveled to all 50 states and Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Newfoundland, England, Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, and Honduras.

Ruth is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Ruth, widow of Rolland Curts, of Hartford City, IN; four sons, Harvey M, husband of Rebecca Sue Shrack, and Bernard, husband of Ina Faye Shrack, all of Dunkirk, IN; James L., husband of Gaye Ann Shrack, of Loretto, and William Duane, husband of Barbara “Boo” Shrack, of Rockbridge Baths, VA; 20 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 34 great-great-grandchildren; and nine step great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, William Shrack, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lula Michael, Carol Inman, and Mary A. Michael; a brother, Willis Michael; daughter-in-law, Norma Shrack; son-in-law, Rolland Curts; and grand-daughter-in-law, Peggy Curts.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Jan. 7 at 11 a.m. at Sugar Grove UMC in Redkey, IN, with Pastor Robert Denny officiating. Interment followed at Black Cemetery Eaton.
