Joe was born Feb. 27, 1953, in St. Paul, to Richard Burgess and Trudy (Ewald) Burgess. He has four brothers, Dan, Pat, Rich, and Dave; and two sisters, Dianne Hexum and Cheryl Boyum. Joe also has many nieces and nephews, aunts, and cousins.
For many years, Joe lived in group homes for the developmentally disabled in Hutchinson, Lester Prairie, and Cokato. He also participated in a work program at the ATHC in Winsted, having just recently retired from there.
A very happy and social person, Joe loved to be active and involved in everything. He enjoyed Lions Club meetings and events, and was well-known and looked after by friends and neighbors in Lester Prairie.
Joe always looked forward to visits and holidays with his family, and especially loved fishing trips with his brothers and nephew Ben on Rainy Lake.
With his health declining and his level of care increasing, Joe was transferred to the Good Samaritan Society in International Falls in September 2011 so he could be near family members during his final months.
Joe loved all of his family very much, and was especially fond of his nephew, Ben and wife Franny. He will be missed by all.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Trudy; a nephew, Scotty Hexum; and a niece, Dawn Boyum.
