Lloyd A. Butterfass Obituary – 12/11/2013


Lloyd Alfred Butterfass, age 93, of Howard Lake, formerly of Waverly, departed this world Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Howard Lake.

He was born May 17, 1920, in Montrose, the son of Gerhard (Jerry) and Anna (Yost) Butterfass. Lloyd was baptized June 13, 1920, and was instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith Aug. 5, 1934, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Montrose.

Lloyd married Esther Koch May 6, 1945, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Montrose. The couple was blessed with five children.

Lloyd was primarily a farmer and a “jack of all trades,” who enjoyed carpentry, and playing cards, dominoes, and checkers. He especially enjoyed dancing with Esther. Ice fishing was also among one of his favorite pastimes when time allowed. He often spoke fondly of ice skating in his younger days on the Crow River.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Esther Butterfass; children Doris (Robert) Schendel, Loren Butterfass, both of Waverly, and Esther (Melvin) Rauch of Stewart; grandchildren Julie (Terry) Fasching, Jonathan (Jody) Schendel, James (Amy) Schendel, Joshua Butterfass, Jessica (Tony) Fudali, Justin (Kris) Butterfass, Jennifer (Jesse) Gunderson, Joni (Eric) Warhol, Jyme Butterfass, Jamie Butterfass, MaClaine Butterfass, Lucas Butterfass and Paul Rauch; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd is further survived by a sister, Marie Kliche of Howard Lake; daughter-in-law Sandi Butterfass of Watkins; and many nieces and nephews; along with many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Edward Butterfass; infant daughter Harriet Butterfass; brothers Elroy Butterfass, and Harold Butterfass; brother-in-law Donald Kliche; and many other relatives.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Dec. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake. Interment was at the Dutch Lake Cemetery in Howard Lake.

Visitation was Friday, Dec. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; and continued Saturday, one hour prior to the services at the church.

Honorary casket bearer was Josh Butterfass.

Casket bearers were Lucas Butterfass, Justin Butterfass, Mac Butterfass, Jon Schendel, James Schendel, and Paul Rauch.
