Orlin E. Doering, 85

Orlin Ernst Doering, age 85, went to his eternal home Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013.

Funeral services will take place Monday, Nov. 4 at noon at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake.

Visitation was Sunday, Nov. 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake, and continues Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church.

The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake is handling the arrangements.

Orlin was born Oct. 27, 1928, in Green Isle Township, to Ernst and Clara Doering (nee Goebel). He was confirmed at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Green Isle Township, and graduated from Arlington Public schools.

Orlin held several jobs throughout his life. The more memorable ones included selling for Gilmer Monuments, working at Carl’s Texaco/Firestone in Minneapolis, and driving school bus for Holt Motors in the Cokato/Dassel School District.

He was a dedicated and conscientious employee, who took pride in his work. His family was pleasantly surprised at the level of enjoyment he got from the many kids he transported on the school bus. He frequently drove the late activities route and loved taking the students to athletic competitions and field trips.

Dad’s favorite pastimes were fishing, dining, and visiting. A perfect day for Dad was spent on the lake with anyone willing to tag along – no matter if it was summer or winter, rain or shine.

Food was always on Orlin’s mind – he lived to eat. He also lived to visit. He had a story for every occasion, and the story started with fishing and ended with food. He had many friends who vouch that his character and love of life will be missed.

Orlin frequently said he fell in love with his wife, Orvella, when she was 14 years old and loved her ever since. They lived in the same house since 1954 until he died.

When Orvella entered the nursing home, Orlin faithfully visited her every day and yes, he usually had lunch with her.

Orlin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Orvella; children Durene (Bob) Rogers of Roanoke, VA, Rick (Karen) Doering of Delano, and Sheri Fenn of Chaska; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
