Ruth Margaret Freed, age 94, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice in Chaska.
She was born June 21, 1918, in St. Paul, the daughter of Gust and Johanna (Ostrom) Bergstrom.
As a young child, her family moved to a farm near Meriden, IA, where she grew up and graduated from the Meriden High School in 1936.
Ruth was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith in Meriden, and was presently a member of the Lamson Evangelical Free Church in Dassel.
She was united in marriage to Harold Freed June 20, 1937, in Meriden, IA. The couple made their home on a farm near Meriden until 1956, when they moved to a farm just north of Hutchinson.
Ruth was a hardworking farm wife, helping with all of the farm chores. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and fishing.
She loved her family dearly and always enjoyed the time that she was able to spend with them, especially the holidays.
Ruth was dedicated to her church, where she was active in the church Bible studies, and served as White Cross Chairwomen.
She will be missed by her family and her many friends.
Ruth is survived by her children, Gene (Audrey) Freed of Eden Prairie, and Carol (Wes) Engstrom of Loves Park, IL; five grandchildren, Steve (Danielle) Engstrom, Kerri (Steve) Mason, Wendy (Jim) Pellitteri, Lynne (J.B.) Blair, and Derek Freed; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents, Gust and Johanna Bergstrom; a brother, Vernon; and a sister, Joyce Rix.
The funeral service took place Friday, April 19 at 11 a.m. at the Lamson Evangelical Free Church in Dassel, with the Rev. Josh Hutchcraft officiating. Interment was at the Pioneer Cemetery, rural Dassel.
There was visitation one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to the Lamson Evangelical Free Church in Dassel.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
