Lenard “Mickel” Elroy Fruetel, age 82, of Cosmos, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
He was born April 12, 1931, in Lester Prairie, the son of Edward and Stella (Packer) Fruetel. Mickel was baptized as an infant in 1931, and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth in 1945, at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Lester Prairie.
He received his education at country school in rural Lester Prairie.
Mickel was united in marriage to Sonja Petersen June 14, 1958, at the Evangelical Free Church in Lester Prairie. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Thomas and Jon.
Mickel and Sonja resided in Lester Prairie, then moved to Cosmos in 1977.
They shared 55 years of marriage.
Mickel farmed and was employed at the Block Plant in Lester Prairie as a foreman for 20 years. He also co-owned Peterson Service Center for 20 years.
After retirement in 1996, Mickel worked part time at the Buffalo Lake Elevator.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos, where he was active on the church board.
Mickel was also a member of Cosmos Lions and Cosmos Community Club. He was the founder of Cosmos Space Festival Pork Chop Supper, where he was the head cook for 40 years.
In addition, Mickel served as a volunteer firefighter for the Lester Prairie Fire Department.
Mickel enjoyed fishing, hunting, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends.
Mickel is survived by his wife, Sonja Fruetel of Cosmos; sons Thomas Fruetel and his wife, Beth, of Litchfield, and Jon Fruetel and his wife, Jody, of Cosmos; grandchildren Andrew, Christopher, Derek, Taylor, Ruby, Amanda and her husband, Cody, Jake and Breanna; and great-granddaughter, Olivia.
He is further survived by his sisters, Mildred Feltmann of Norwood Young America, and Marcella Fruetel of Glencoe; a brother, Ralph Fruetel and his wife, Elaine of Silt, CO; brother-in-law Kenneth Petersen and his wife, Brenda, of Hutchinson; sister-in-law Vera Fruetel of Lester Prairie; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Mickel was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Stella Fruetel; brothers Howard Fruetel and his wife, Elaine, Elmer Fruetel and his wife, Rosella, Gilbert Fruetel and his wife, Rosie, Wilfred Fruetel and his wife, Phyllis, Virgil Fruetel, and Leslie Fruetel and his wife, Helen; and a brother-in-law, Harold Feltmann.
A memorial service took place Monday, Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos, with interment in the church cemetery. Pastor Marlaine Doidge officiated at the service, and Charles Lietzau was the organist. Soloist Nate Blum sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “When The Saints Go Marching In,” “O Happy Home,” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Urn bearers were Mickel’s grandchildren: Andrew, Christopher, Derek, Taylor, Ruby, Amanda, Jake, and Breanna; and greatgranddaughter, Olivia.
