Sophie J. Harens, age 83, of Hutchinson, formerly of Silver Lake and Glencoe, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Harmony River Nursing Home in Hutchinson.
She was born April 4, 1930, in Silver Lake, the daughter of Emil and Theresa (Juncewski) Ruzicka. Sophie was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in her Catholic faith as a youth. She received her education in Silver Lake.
Sophie was united in marriage to Leo Harens, and the couple made their home in Glencoe. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Theresa.
After Leo’s death, Sophie moved to the Golden Ages Home in Glencoe, foster care in Winsted, to the Tender Years Retirement Home in Plato, and then to Mankato in 1980. In 2006, when Sophie experienced some medical concerns, she moved to a Supervised Living Service Group Home in Hutchinson. In 2010, she moved to Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson, and in 2012, transferred to Harmony River Living Center.
Sophie worked at Mankato Rehabilitation Center, Inc. in Mankato, where she became active in their EASE retirement program. When Sophie moved back to Hutchinson, she began working again in the non-vocational program at ATHC in Hutchinson.
Sophie enjoyed gardening in the early years. She also loved her occasional visits with her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Harens of Hutchinson; sister, Rosie Thiel of Glencoe; nephew, Ray Thiel and his wife, Sue, of Midwest City, OK; niece Doris Westphal and her husband, Arlen, of Montrose; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Leo, Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Theresa Ruzicka; brothers Leo Ruzicka, and Ernest Ruzicka and his wife, Jeanette; sister Lillian Tonn and her husband, Hilton; and brother-in-law Wilfred Thiel.
