Michele Jane Harmening, age 41, of Dassel, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, surrounded by her family at her home in Collinwood Township.
She was born Nov. 21, 1971, in Luverne, the daughter of John and Arlene (DeVries) Kooistra. Michele was baptized as an infant, and confirmed in her faith as a youth, at the American Reformed Church in Luverne. She was later baptized as an adult, in 2012, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel,.
Michele received her education in Hills Beaver Creek, MN and was a graduate of the Hills Beaver Creek High School class of 1990. She furthered her education at the Worthington Community College for two years, where she received her associate degree.
Michele entered active military service in the United States Air Force May 4, 1993. She was honorably discharged May 3, 2001. During that time, Michele received the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Air Force Training Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Michele was united in marriage to Corey Harmening May 28, 1994, in Mt. Charleston, NV. This marriage was blessed with two children, Cody and Megan. The couple resided in Nevada, Little Falls, and Lakefield, MN, and later moved to the Dassel/Hutchinson area in 2000. Michele and Corey shared 19 years of marriage.
Michele was employed at West Elementary School in Hutchinson for five years. She also worked at the City of Hutchinson in their IT department, and recently at Firelake Manufacturing in Dassel for five years.
A member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, Michele was active as a youth counselor, and participated in several youth trips.
Michele enjoyed tending to her flower gardens. She loved to run and do aerobics, and enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Michele was diagnosed with cancer Aug. 29, 2011. She fought a courageous battle.
She is survived by her husband, Corey Harmening of Dassel; children, RPSA, Cody Harmening, and Megan Harmening, both of Dassel; parents John and Arlene Kooistra of Beaver Creek, MN; sisters Dawn Kooistra of Kitchner, Ontario, Canada, Deb Moeller and her husband, Kevin of Sherman, SD, Dori Horstman and her husband, Robert of Inwood, IA, and twin sister Melonie Vancura and her husband, Scott of Lakefield; a brother, Mark Kooistra of Beaver Creek; parents-in-law, Ken and Jean Harmening; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service took place Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. at Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, with the Revs. Keith Carlson and Robert Horstman officiating. Organist was Harvey Peterson; and soloist Sarah Cady sang “Give Me Jesus.” Congregational hymns were “It Is Well With My Soul,” “Wonderful, Merciful Savior,” and “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone).” Michele’s children, Cody and Megan were her urn bearers. Interment followed in the Dassel Community Cemetery.
Family and friends gathered Monday, Nov. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church, as well as Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.
