Clara “Birdie” Mohring Hickman, age 95, of Buffalo, formerly of Montrose, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013.
She was born March 13, 1918.
Clara graduated from Montrose High School in 1934, and Hamline University in 1938.
She has been a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Montrose.
Clara began her teaching career in LaPorte City, IA. She then moved to Braham, MN, where she taught and served as principal through the war years.
In 1947, Clara married Milton Hickman, and they settled and farmed in Montrose.
They purchased their dairy farm in Buffalo in 1955, where they raised their family.
Clara went back to teaching in the Rockford Public Schools in 1959, until her retirement in 1980.
Clara and Milton were involved in many organizations and made friends everywhere they went. They traveled to major cities around the country for Wright Hennepin Electric, national meetings, and Milt’s Army reunions (including a trip to Europe). They also vacationed in Hawaii numerous times in their later years.
Clara volunteered at the Buffalo Hospital, Parkview Care Center, and The Wright County Historical Society.
She moved to Park Terrace Assisted Living in Buffalo in 2007, and remained there until her death.
Birdie was preceded in death by her parents, Oggie and Elsie Mohring; husband Milton; granddaughter Katie; sisters Mildred Lenz, and Jo Anderson; and brothers Clinton and Alfred Mohring.
She is survived by her children, Jim (Joy), Bill (Debbie), Mike (Sharon), and Jan (John) Kanduth; grandchildren Chuck (Denielle), Beau (Genevieve), Stephanie (Aaron), Blake, and Jana; and great-grandchildren Justin, Brenden, and Sloane.
The funeral service took place Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. at Montrose United Methodist Church.
There was visitation Friday, Oct. 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo.
