Donald A. Hoese, age 80, of Mayer, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at his home.
He was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Mayer, the son of Alfred and Alice (Smith) Hoese. Donald was baptized Aug. 20, 1933, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer by the Rev. F.W. Erthal; and confirmed March 30, 1947, at the same church by the Rev. Elmer Schwandt.
Donald was united in marriage to Karen H. Emich July 12, 1958, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. A.F. Vomhof.
Donald served in the Marine Corps, and was very proud of having done so.
He was a member of the American Legion Post in New Germany, and served on various agricultural boards.
Donald farmed his entire life in the Mayer area.
He held various offices at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer throughout his life, and went on mission trips to Russia, China, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Kenya.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Alice Hoese; brothers Gordon, Harold, and Clyde Hoese; father-in-law and mother-in-law George and Helen Emich; and brother-in-law Ronald Emich.
He is survived by his loving family, wife Karen; son Matt Hoese of Deland, FL; daughters and sons-in-law DeAnn and John Danowski of Phoenix, AZ, Patty and John Farber of Waverly, and Jackie and Kenny Swartzer of New Germany; grandchildren Blake Farber and fiancée Kara Schneewind, Matt Farber, Josh Swartzer and fiancée Samantha Motzko, Clay Hoese, Kiley Hoese, and Madyson Hoese; and a great-grandson, Carter Motzko.
Donald is further survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Mary Lou Hoese of Colorado, Mary Ann Hoese of Mayer, Marly Hoese of Minneapolis, Doris Emich of Nicollet, Roger and LuAnn Emich of Waconia, and Kathryn and Wheaties Schrader of Plato; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer with the Rev. Lucas Woodford officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday, Nov. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m.at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.; and continued Wednesday, one hour prior to the service.
Casket bearers were Blake Farber, Matt Farber, Josh Swartzer, Clay Hoese, Larry Hoeft, and Jim “Shimo” Schrader.
Honorary casket bearers were Kiley Hoese, Madyson Hoese, Kara Schneewind, Samantha Motzko, and Carter Motzko.
