Alice Matilda Marie (Schultz) Lester, age 93, of Lester Prairie, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
She was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Bergen Township, the daughter of Ewald and Minnie (Hasse) Schultz. Alice was baptized in the Christian faith as an infant Aug. 29, 1920, by the Rev. W. Baumhoefner, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth March 25, 1934, by the Rev. J. Schert, both at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bergen Township.
Alice helped on the family farm, and received her education at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Parochial School in Bergen Township.
She was united in marriage to Edward Lester July 6, 1952, by the Rev. Wm. Erb at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bergen Township. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Sam and Peggy.
Alice and Edward made their home on a farm near Lester Prairie, until 1995, when they moved into Lester Prairie. The couple shared over 43 years of marriage, until Edward passed away April 28, 1996.
Alice worked at Tonka Toys in Mound, and was the cook at the nursing home and at Viking Café, both in Lester Prairie.
She was a lifelong member at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, serving on the ladies aid and altar guild.
Alice enjoyed gardening, fishing, snowmobiling, puzzles, word books and playing cards, including 500, Kings in the Corner, Crazy 8, and Euchre. She loved making candy on New Year’s Eve, and family gatherings at the cabin. Alice cherished the time spent with her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Sam Lester and his wife, Vicki, and Peggy Gantner and her husband, Ron, all of Lester Prairie; grandchildren James Lester of Hutchinson, Michael Lester and his wife, Helen, of Silver Lake, and Robert Gantner of Lester Prairie; great-granddaughter Lila Kimmes of New Munich; a sister, Pearl Stender of Minnetonka; sister-in-law Eldoris Schultz of Waconia; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
In addition to her husband, Edward, Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Ewald and Minnie Schultz; sisters Edna Schultz and her husband, Edwin, Lillian Bergmann and her husband, Lawrence, Alma Rusch and her husband, Walter, and infant Florence Schultz; brothers Elmer Schultz and his wife, Coreen, Walter Schultz and his wife, Iris, and Victor Schultz; and sister-in-law Betty Schwartz.
Funeral services took place Thursday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with the Rev. Travis Loeslie officiating. Nancy Buckentine was the organist. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.” Interment followed at the church cemetery.
Honorary casket bearers were Kendall Schultz, Bradley Schultz, Larry Schultz, Paul Schwartz, Mark Schwartz, and Dave Trende.
Casket bearers were Sam Lester, Ron Gantner, James Lester, Michael Lester, and Robert Gantner.
