Guido H. Lilienthal, 84

Guido Henry Lilienthal, age 84, of Plato, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine.

He was born Aug. 3, 1928, at home near Plato, the son of Heinrich “Henry” and Lydia (Elling) Lilienthal. Guido was baptized as an infant Aug. 19, 1928, by Pastor Zwintocher; and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth March 28, 1942, by Pastor Ehlen, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato.

He received his education at a country school in rural Plato

Guido was united in marriage to Olga Jopp Nov. 27, 1965, by Pastor Brill at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. Their union was blessed with four children, Dennis, Deanna, Darren, and Denise.

Guido and Olga made their home in rural Plato, and shared over 47 years of marriage.

Guido was a farmer and loved working with his dairy cattle and hogs, and planting the fields.

His faith was very important to him, as was being a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, where he served in many capacities including as a trustee, usher, a member of the cemetery board, and a member of Men’s Club.

Guido’s passion and love was trapping. He also enjoyed dancing, reading, listening to old time music, driving the 3-wheeler, and watching the Minnesota Twins, wrestling, and boxing on television. Guido especially cherished the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Olga Lilienthal of Plato; children Dennis Lilienthal and his wife, Roberta, of Plato, Deanna Scott and her husband, Perry, of Chanhassen, Darren Lilienthal and his wife, Teri, of Plato, and Denise Busse and her husband, Scott, of Glencoe; grandchildren Colton Lilienthal, Devin Lilienthal, Kaden Lilienthal, Rogan Lilienthal, Payton Lilienthal, Spencer Lilienthal, Beau Busse, Reid Busse, Quin Busse, Meara Busse, Laria Busse, and Cybli Busse.

Guido is further survived by a sister-in-law, Darlene Lilienthal of Plato; brother-in-law LeRoy Jopp and his wife, Teri, of Lakeville; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lydia Lilienthal; father-in-law and mother-in-law Paul and Gertrude Jopp; siblings Verona Lilienthal, Vernon Lilienthal and his wife, Lena, Audrey Neseth and her husband, Robert, Milan Lilienthal and his wife, JoAnn, Victor Lilienthal, Richard Lilienthal; sisters-in-law Evangeline Tober and her husband, Fred, and Bonnie Lou Barlau and her husband, William; and brother-in-law Roger Jopp.

Funeral services took place Wednesday, May 22 at 5 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, with interment following at the church cemetery. The Rev. Bruce Laabs officiated at the service. Yvonne Schuette was the organist, and the soloist, Lawrence Biermann sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.” Congregational hymns were “Brief Life Is Our Portion,” “Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus,” and “Rock Of Ages.”

Guido’s granddaughters; Payton Lilienthal, Meara Busse, Laria Busse, and Cybli Busse, were honorary casket bearers:
