Meta C. Luebke, 107

Meta C. Luebke, age 107, of Mayer, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at the Elim Home in Watertown.

Meta was born Dec. 17, 1905, in Young America Township, the daughter of Carl and Catherine (Trocke) Braun. She was baptized Dec. 31, 1905, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Young America by the Rev. Baumhoefner, and confirmed by the same April 13, 1919.

Meta graduated from Central High School in 1924. She continued her education, attending Normal School for teaching after graduation. She taught at a country school near Young America for two years, and was an excellent teacher.

Meta was united in marriage to Alfred W. Luebke Sept. 27, 1927, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Young America by the Rev. M. F. Abraham.

Meta had knack for creating beautiful pieces of clothing, which she sewed on her own. She loved to bake, crochet Afghans, sew quilts, and tat doilies.

Whenever there was a family gathering, the grandchildren would always request grandma make her delicious kuchen (coffee cake); she was a superb baker. Meta would also help out on the farm whenever there was work to be done.

Her faith and going to church were very important to her life, and being known as the “church grandma” made it extra special.

Meta was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Catherine Braun; husband Alfred; brothers Ernst and Fred Braun; sisters Winnie Lehrke, Anna Raether, Emma Menzel; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her loving family: daughter and son-in-law Melba and Louis Honebrink of Mayer; son and daughter-in-law Norville and LaVonne Luebke of Mayer: grandchildren Bonnie and Bernie Stoeckman, Yvonne and Robert Alm, Larry and Barbara Honebrink, Lyle and Wanda Honebrink, Brian and Suzanne Honebrink, Vicki and Don Russell, Thomas and Jody Luebke, Steven and Sherry Luebke, John Luebke, and Rebecca El Bakkal; and great-grandchildren Jeff Stoeckman, Wendy and Brian Hall, Timothy and Suzie Alm, Christine Kincaid, Nathan and Elizabeth Alm, Andrew and Hannah Alm, Jay and Jenn Honebrink, Mike and LeAnna Honebrink, Gwen and Keith Hand, Dean Honebrink, Gail and Marvin Schuft, David and Paula Honebrink, Justin and Andrea Honebrink, Kendra and Josh Gilmore, Brenden and Emily Honebrink, Cali Russell, Tyler Russell, Melissa and Jacob Buesgens, Holly Luebke, Matthew Luebke and fiancé Vanessa, Lindsay and Wyatt Getten, Brady Luebke, and Tanner Luebke.

Meta is further survived by her great-great-grandchildren, Logan, Cameron, Dexter, Kinsey, Ayden, Owen, Addison, Josiah, Grace, Lily, Abel, Hope, David, Garrett, Micah, Damon, Cole, Ashton, Cooper, Lillia, Ariya, and Carson; step great-grandchildren Raymond Pfeil, and Jeanne Pfeil; and step great-great-grandchildren Hailey, Delainey, Joseph and Garrett.

The funeral service took place Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer with the Rev. Adam Gless officiating. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Mayer.

There was visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Meta’s grandsons and great-grandsons were her casket bearers.
