Janet Marion (Mattson) Luedtke, age 79, of Hutchinson, died Friday, May 24, 2013, surrounded by family, at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, after suffering a brain aneurysm.
She was born June 23, 1933, at home on the farm in Meeker County, the daughter of Reuben and Lavina (Forsberg) Mattson. Janet was baptized and confirmed at Stockholm Lutheran Church in rural Cokato.
She walked several miles a day in order to attend the one-room Lake Jenny Country School, and graduated from Dassel High School in 1951.
Janet was united in marriage to Fred Luedtke Aug. 16, 1953, at Stockholm Lutheran Church. This marriage was blessed with three daughters, Sherri, Kim and Kay. Janet and Fred resided and farmed north of Hutchinson. They shared 50 years of marriage until Fred passed away Feb. 6, 2004.
Janet was united in marriage to Art Schmitz May 23, 2009, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in St. Paul Park. High school sweethearts, they were reunited after their spouses of over 50 years each passed away. Janet and Art resided in Hutchinson, and shared four years of marriage, which they lovingly referred to as their “bonus round.”
Janet worked at McLeod County Social Services in Glencoe for 23 years, retiring in 1995.
She attended River of Hope ELCA Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, and was also a member of the Bear Lake Sunshine Group.
Janet enjoyed playing bridge, growing flowers, and reading. She loved going on long walks and traveling, and especially treasured spending time with her family, grandchildren, and friends. She was looking forward to her first great-grandbaby coming in September.
Janet is survived by her husband, Art Schmitz, of Hutchinson; daughters Sherri Notermann and her husband, Dennis, of Hutchinson, Kim Luedtke and her partner, Maureen Sholly of Duluth, and Kay Smith and her husband, Ken of Minnetonka; stepchildren Cher Vang and her husband, Roger, of St. Cloud, Mark Schmitz and his wife, Cyndi, of Woodbury, and Tammy Hingst and her husband, Dan, of Inver Grove Heights; grandchild Michael Smith of Minnetonka; step-grandchildren Mike Notermann and his wife, Elisia of Franklin, TN, Jeremy Vang and his wife, Sarah, of Cottage Grove, Krista Randall and her husband, Ryan of Eden Valley, Ben and Hailey Schmitz of Cottage Grove, and Justin and Aaron Hingst of Inver Grove Heights; and like-a-grandchild, Brittany Kulberg of Hutchinson.
Janet is further survived by siblings, Harold Mattson and his wife, Helen of Dassel, Donna Collison of Bemidji, and Rozanne Provencher of Hutchinson; cousin-but-like-a-sister, Shirley Bosch and her husband, Roland of Atwater; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her first husband, Fred Luedtke; she was preceded in death by her parents, Reuben and Lavina Mattson; sister and brother-in-law Lois and Gene Ritter; brothers-in-law Bruce Collison and Bernie Provencher; sisters-in-law Esther Malchow and her husband, Lloyd, Margaret Schmidt and her husband, Frank, and Myrtle Witte and her husband, Gust; and brothers-in-law Ed and Herman Luedtke.
Funeral services took place Thursday, May 30 at 11 a.m. at River of Hope Church (at Vineyard Methodist Church) in Hutchinson, with interment in the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Visitation was Wednesday, May 29 from 5 to 8 p.m., and Thursday, May 30 from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Dobratz-Hantge Chapel in Hutchinson, and continued Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
