James Melvin “Jim” Norine, age 73, of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away suddenly Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in South Carolina.
He was born Dec. 31, 1939, in Cokato, a son of the late Melvin and Dorene Johnson Norine.
Jim graduated from St. Cloud State University with a degree in biology. While teaching biology at North Branch High School and Blaine High School in Minnesota, he enjoyed success coaching basketball and golf.
Jim proudly served his country in the US Marines Corps.
In 1976, Jim moved to Washington, DC, where he worked 16 years at the headquarters of the National Rifle Association and was promoted to director of hunter services. After leaving the NRA, he became the Midwest regional field director for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation based in Lawrence, KS.
Jim’s last position before retirement was as a real estate agent with Prudential Myrtle Beach, working with his wife, Jacquelyn, as The Norine Team.
Well known as an avid outdoorsman and golfer, Jim also devoted time to training his beloved dogs, Gus and Max. Ever a loyal friend, he was one of those special people who “never met a stranger.”
Jim was a member of St. Philip’s Lutheran Church, and served on the church council.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Norine of Ottertail.
He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Norine of Myrtle Beach, FL; son Troy James Norine of Eau Claire, WI; daughter Tanya Sheppard of Springfield, VA; four grandchildren, Devan, Tristan, Vincent and Owen; and a brother, Bradley Norine and his wife, Deborah of Annandale. He is also survived by his niece, nephew, aunt, and uncles.
A memorial service took place Friday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church in Myrtle Beach. Interment will be private at a later date.
