Viola L. Schauer Obituary – 10/19/2013


Viola L. Schauer, age 91, of Winsted, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

She was born Nov. 22, 1921, in Hollywood Township, Carver County, the daughter of Julius and Augusta (Wolff) Gatz.

Viola was baptized Dec. 18, 1921, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood Township, Carver County. She was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith April 5, 1936, at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Viola was joined in holy marriage with Martin J. Schauer June 8, 1947, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood. God blessed their marriage with two sons.

Viola enjoyed her flower beds, embroidering, and traveling throughout the United States and overseas with Martin.

She was a longtime member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted, where she was a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and taught Sunday School. Viola also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW in Winsted.

She is survived by her loving sons, Gary M. Schauer, and Ronnie J. Schauer both of Winsted; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin J. Schauer April 6, 2002; her parents, Julius and Augusta Gatz; and by two brothers, Glenn and Norman Gatz.

Funeral services took place Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted with the Rev. Mark Loder officiating. Molly Loder was the organist. Interment followed at the Winsted Public Cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, and continued Wednesday morning at the church one hour prior to services.

Casket bearers were Bill Braunwarth and Andrew Braunwarth, Dean Jopp, Nathan Jopp, Steve Gatz and Bruce Gatz.
