Delbert “Butch” Ervin Schug, age 78, of Watertown, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at the Elim Rehab and Nursing Home in Watertown.
He was born Oct. 18, 1934, in Cologne, the son of Wilfred Schug, Sr. and Virginia (Beversdorf) Schug. Delbert was baptized as an infant Oct. 21, 1934, by Father Andrew Rinke at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Cologne, and was confirmed in his faith as a youth also at St. Bernard’s.
Delbert received his education in Cologne, before returning home to help on the family farm.
He entered the United States Army Reserves Jan. 31, 1955, and received an honorable discharge Jan. 30, 1963.
Delbert was united in marriage to Joyce Luke July 17, 1959, by Father Bertrand at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Cologne. Butch and Joyce made their home in Bongards and Cologne and in 1967, moved to Norwood Young America. Their marriage was blessed with 11 children, Richard, Donald, Ronald, Daniel, Nancy, Mary, David, Steven, Diane, Randy and Janet.
Butch and Joyce shared over 34 years of marriage, until Joyce passed away June 22, 1994, at the age of 54.
Butch worked at several jobs, most notably starting in 1966, at the Eaton Corporation, where he worked for 30 years. He also tended bar in Norwood Young America for 31 years, retiring in 2012.
He was a member at Church of the Ascension in Norwood Young America; and a member of the Norwood Young America VFW Post 1783.
Butch enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, polkas, and the Minnesota Twins. He especially cherished the time spent with his family and many friends.
Delbert is survived by his children, Richard Schug and his wife, Sherri, of Norwood Young America, Donald Schug of Chisago City, Ronald Schug and his wife, Tammy, of Norwood Young America, Daniel Schug and his wife, Lisa, of Hamburg, Nancy Crandall and her husband, Donald, of Hampton, Mary Boecker and her husband, Douglas, of Rochester, Steven Schug of Eagan, Diane Damuth and her husband, Todd, of Montrose, Randy Schug of Green Isle, and Janet Schug of Norwood Young America; 12 grandchildren: Jennifer Schug, Matthew Schug, Alyssa Schug, Cassie (and Corey) Storms, Chet Schug, Brianna Schug, Mariah Schug, Leah Harms (and Tim Murphy), Bethany Boecker, Noah Boecker, Nicole Kroells, and Faith Schug; and two great-grandchildren, Cidney and Easton Storms.
He is further survived by his siblings, Dorleen Schneewind, Delores Mueffels, both of Waconia, Alan Schug and his wife, Patsy, of Watertown, and Elaine Feltmann and her husband, Roger, of Glencoe; sister-in-law Lois Hendricks and her husband, James, of Watertown; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
In addition to his wife, Joyce, Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Virginia Schug; son David Schug; brothers Wilfred Schug, Jr. and Duane “Jim” Schug; brothers-in-law Leroy Schneewind, and Gerald Mueffels; and sister-in-law, Mary Louise Schug.
Funeral services took place Monday, Sept. 30 at Church of the Ascension in Norwood Young America, followed by interment at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Norwood Young America.
Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Norwood Young America, and continued Monday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
