Michael R. Specken Obituary – 05/09/2013


Michael Raymond Specken, age 62, of Winsted, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by family following a two-year battle with cancer.

He was born Oct. 1, 1950, in Minneapolis, the son of Raymond and Mary (Littfin) Specken.

Mike graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1968. He later graduated from Dunwoody Institute, specializing in tool and die making.

Michael was joined in holy marriage with Marietta R. Cochran Oct. 28, 1968. God blessed their marriage with five children.

Mike was employed by Sterner Lighting in Winsted for more than 40 years. He was also employed for two years at AWI in Winsted before retiring.

A faithful, lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, Mike was a 25-year member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8253.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, yard work, cooking, family vacations, his children, and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Marietta R. Specken; four children: Michael (Lynn) Specken of Waconia, Thomas Specken of Winsted, Tammy Specken of Eau Claire, WI, and Mindy (Brad Radtke) of Winsted; grandchildren Bess, Beau, Brooks and Bennett Specken; and Caleb and Marissa Radtke; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Annette (Gary) Norman, Kevin Cochran, and Dolly (Guy) Hedtke; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by a twin daughter, Tonya; his parents; his mother-in-law, RoseAnn (Joseph) Loebertmann; father-in-law Gerald (Betty) Cochran; brother-in-law Lester “Buddy” Cochran; a future son-in-law, Chris Mueller; and by a godchild, Nate Westrup.

A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, May 13 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with Father Paul Schumacher and Father Tony Hesse as the concelebrants. Gift bearers were Bess, Beau, Brooks, and Bennett Specken, and Caleb and Marissa Radtke. Interment was at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday, May 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and continued Monday morning, May 13 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Casket bearers were Ken Westrup, Ray Getz, Ole Johnson, Dan Dooley, Deano Schermann, Glen Heller, Wayne Decker, Jerry Wemhoff, and Bill Lachermeier.
