Robert Ernest Tormanen, age 70, of Cokato, passed away at home Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, after a battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 9, 1942, in Litchfield, to Eino and Agnes (Ailie) Tormanen.
Robert grew up north of Cokato, and graduated from Cokato High School in 1960.
Robert entered the United States Army June 30, 1960, and served overseas. He was honorably discharged June 21, 1963.
Robert married Grace Pennala Jan. 7, 1967, in Farmington Hills, MI. The couple was married by the Rev. Raymond Tulkki. They lived first in Detroit, then Cokato, then back to Detroit, and finally back to Cokato.
Robert worked for a time at Ford Motor Company, and then became a mail carrier. After retirement from the post office, he went into real estate, worked for an expediting company, delivered the Detroit News and Free Press, and recently drove charter bus for Holt Charter.
A very active individual, Robert enjoyed interacting with his family, gardening, outdoor hiking and camping, reading, and he wrote an autobiography.
He is survived by his wife, Grace, of Cokato; children: Sherry (Wayne) Anderson of Laurium, MI, Gregory (Sharyn) Tormanen of Howell, MI, Kenneth (Jennifer) Tormanen of Dassel, Karen (Aaron) Davison of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Mari (Brian) Pieti, Eric (Sheila) Tormanen, all of Dassel; Renee (Jonathan) Wesa, Joel (Nichole) Tormanen, all of Cokato; and Teresa (Jay) Johnson of Howell, MI; his beloved 39 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and brothers and sister, Richard (Anne) Tormanen of Dassel; Joan (Robbin) Lindula of Edgewood, WA, and Calvin (Susan) Tormanen of Park Rapids.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas; and an infant daughter, Mary.
The funeral service took place Monday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. at First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Dassel, followed by interment at Cokato Finnish Cemetery.
Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 8 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the church.
