Marlan Jay Vande Steeg, age 50, of Prinsburg, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at his home.
He was born Aug. 24, 1962, in Willmar, the son of Clarence and Martha (Breems) Vande Steeg. Marlan grew up in Prinsburg and graduated from Central Minnesota Christian School.
He lived in the Twin Cities for a short time doing janitorial work for Riverside Towers, and at Attracta Signs.
Marlan married Rhonda Schwengler in 1985, and they made their home in Winsted, where Marlan owned and operated Van’s Signs and Screen Printing for many years.
Marlan moved to Hutchinson in 2008, and spent much of his time in Prinsburg, caring for his mother.
A gifted artist and wood carver, Marlan also enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially camping and canoeing.
He is survived by his three children, Jason (and Teri) Vande Steeg, Laurel Vande Steeg, and Aaron Vande Steeg, all of Hutchinson; his mother, Martha Vande Steeg of Prinsburg; two brothers, Ken (and Julie) Vande Steeg of Maple Lake, and Larry (and Jodi) Vande Steeg of Willmar; a brother-in-law, Everett Buss of Clara City; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Vande Steeg; and a sister, Myra Buss.
Memorial services took place Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsberg, with visitation for one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will take place at Holland Township Cemetery at a later date.
