Roger Wells Obituary – 6/24/2013


Roger Wells, age 85, of Park Rapids, formerly of Howard Lake, died Monday, June 24, 2013.

He was born June 8, 1928, in Howard Lake, to Homer and Leila Wells. Roger attended school there, graduating in 1946.

He then served two years in the Navy.

Following his service, Roger received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota. During the summer months, Roger had the distinction of being the first park ranger in the Badlands of South Dakota. He was also a graduate of the Colorado School of Trades.

Roger married Darlene Schrupp April 2, 1955, at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake. Their first home was in Waseca, where Roger was a manager at Herter’s. They became parents of one daughter, Terri, and also lived in Howard Lake in the early 1960s.

In 1964, Roger and Darlene purchased Sunset Lodge on Potato Lake near Park Rapids. They met wonderful people/guests during their ownership, many becoming lifelong friends.

Rog loved hunting and fishing, making many Canadian trips. He also enjoyed having company stop by, good conversation, and the coffee was always on! He was very artistic, plus had the talent to fix anything.

Roger was deeply loved and will be deeply missed by his wife, Darlene; daughter Terri (Rick) Benham; “granddogs” Spencer and Simon; brother Miles (Alice, Darlene’s sister); niece, nephews, cousins and their families, and many friends.

The funeral service took place Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran in Park Rapids.

Visitation was Friday, June 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jones Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids.
