Dorothy M. Brandel Obituary – 07/10/2014


Dorothy Marie Brandel, age 89, of Cokato, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Cokato Manor.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 14 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church of Silver Lake. Interment will be at Stockholm Township Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday, July 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Cokato, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.; and continues Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.

The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato is handling the arrangements.

Dorothy was born May 6, 1925, in New Ulm, to Arthur and Anna (Palmer) Walser. She was baptized and confirmed at St. George Catholic Church.

Dorothy attended St. George Catholic School and the University of Minnesota Agriculture School, from which she received her high school diploma.

She was married to Laurel Brandel May 4, 1949, at St. George Catholic Church. The couple farmed in the St. George area until 1963, when the family moved to Cokato.

Dorothy’s primary occupation was being a mom to her nine children. She also was employed by Abelcon (Fabri Tech) from 1969 through 1995.

What spare time she had went into gardening and baking.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Ronald (Mary Lou) Brandel of Cokato, Julie (Allen) Gutknecht of Buffalo, Janice (Dave) Remiger of Wabasso, Allen (Connie) Brandel, Dorene (Gordy) Erickson, Dale (Jennifer) Brandel, all of Cokato, Gary (Maren) Brandel of Apple Valley, Randy (Roberta) Brandel of Cokato, and Mary (Larry) Justin of New Brighton; 23 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Marilyn Walser and Dorothy Vandendreissche.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurel, in 2008; her parents; and her brothers, James, Joseph, and Robert.
