Robert E. Hallquist, 87

Robert Eugene Hallquist, 87, formerly of Dassel, passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis.

He was born March 23, 1927 in Hibbing, to Clarence and Alma (Almquist) Hallquist.

Robert grew up in Hibbing, and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Hibbing. During his high school education, he switched schools and attended Itasca Junior College in Grand Rapids, where he graduated in 1945.

The next day after graduation, he left for basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station, having joined the Navy earlier. He served on the USS Yosemite in the Pacific Theater.

Robert was united in marriage Aug. 21, 1947, to Corinne (Jones) in Minneapolis.

He attended MacPhail Center for Music, and the University of Minnesota. He then taught accordion lessons in Hutchinson and surrounding communities in the 1950s.

Robert and Corinne moved to Roseville, where they raised their four children. Robert worked at Sperry Univac in the Twin Cities for 25 years, retiring in 1984.

In 1973, he bought a farm in Dassel and resided in Dassel until 2012, when he moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis.

He enjoyed music, playing his harmonica, accordion, and singing. He was a member of the Litchfield Area Male Chorus for many years.

He also had a love for animals, especially his horses and dogs.

His family cabin on Lake Pokegama near Grand Rapids was a place he loved to be since his childhood days.

In his retirement years, he enjoyed doing carpentry jobs. He took three trips to Sweden, where he enjoyed visiting many relatives. He also went on a mission trip with his church to Costa Rica.

Robert is survived by his wife of 67 years, Corinne of Dassel; daughters, Susan (Ivan) Sunde and Caryn (Jesse) Wilson, both of Spicer; sons, Charles (Suzanne) of Lodi, WI and James (Gwen) of Dassel; grandchildren, Troy (Mandy) Sunde, Kyle (Stephanie) Sunde, Dayna (Charlie) Johnson; step-grandchildren, Lesa King, Jesse (Mylie) Wilson, Robb (Tanya) Hallquist, Laura (Jeremy) Radermacher, Jonas Hallquist, Lauren Hallquist; 13 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Platisha of Hibbing; sister-in-law Marion Patterson of Andover; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Alma Hallquist; sister, Clarice Bostyancic; daughter-in law, Joyce Hallquist; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; a nephew; and a niece.

A memorial service took place Sunday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m., at Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel.
