Arrangements are being handled by Belmont Funeral Home of Henning.
Dorothy was born June 20, 1921, on a farm in Elmo Township, the daughter of Hjalmer and Gladys (Barker) Fiskum, and second in a family of five sisters and one brother. Her father died when she was 14 years old, leaving her mother to struggle through the Depression years caring for her family.
The children remained close all of their lives. Dorothy spent her entire life in and around Henning, where she graduated from high school and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Kenneth Halvorson of Elmo Township July 27, 1941. They raised three children and farmed during the day, while Dorothy worked for a time as the bookkeeper of the Almora cheese factory, working late into the night.
She loved gardening, and planted many flower beds. After her husband’s death in 1981, she enjoyed spending winters with family and attending the events of grandchildren. In the summer, she would return to the farm to spend many hours on her John Deere, mowing her huge yard, and watching the birds that came to her feeders. Her evenings were spent reading and making crafts for Christmas presents.
Dorothy was noted for sending greeting cards to everyone for birthdays and other special occasions. She collected postcards sent to her from all over the world by family and friends through the years.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband, Kenneth, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Gaylord and Kelly Fiskum; sister Wilma Fiskum; sisters and brothers-in-law Dodie and Robert Rortvedt; Norma and Jack Burzette; and Harriet and Hank Sahli; brother-in-law Tommy Armstrong, son-in-law Dennis Payne; and granddaughter Jessica Halvorson.
Dorothy is survived by three children, Kent (Sidney) of Modesto, CA, Randy (Linda) of Edina, and Sherrie Payne of Delano; a sister, Beverly Armstrong of Willmar; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
