Donald Herman Kroells, age 74, of Hamburg, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born Dec. 3, 1939, in Glencoe, a twin son of Herman and Gertrude (Oelfke) Kroells. Donald was baptized as an infant Dec. 14, 1939, by the Rev. O. J. Vriesen at the Glencoe Hospital in Glencoe; and was confirmed in his faith as a youth March 29, 1953, by the Rev. L. Wohlfeil at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg.
Don attended country school at District 25 and Emanuel Lutheran Parochial School in Hamburg, and then Central High School in Norwood Young America, graduating with the class of 1957.
He was united in marriage to Margie Borkenhagen Nov. 18, 1972, at Fieldon Trinity Lutheran Church in Lewisville, MN. Donald and Margie’s marriage was blessed with two children, Teresa and Daniel. They shared over 41 years of marriage together.
Following their marriage, the couple made their home on Donald’s family farm in Hamburg.
In the early years, Donald worked at Farmhand in Green Isle, hauled eggs for Barren Egg Company, and tended bar at Bohnen’s Bar in Norwood. After his father had a farm accident, he started milking and running the land on the family farm until 1996. Then, in 1997, Donald worked at Milltronics in Waconia, until 2009.
He was an active member at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, where he sang in the men’s choir, served as an usher, and was a steward.
He was a member of the Carver County Holstein Association.
Donald always had a smile on his face and loved life. He enjoyed bowling, listening to country music, watching basketball, football and golf on television; and having coffee at Emma Krumbee’s with friends. He loved attending cow shows, and could always pick out the winners.
Don truly valued his friends and family, and his granddaughter, Chloe, occupied a large portion of his heart.
He is survived by his wife, Margie; daughter, Teresa; son, Daniel and his wife, Ann; granddaughter, Chloe; sister, Ramona Ehrke and her husband, Clarence; sister-in-law Bernice Schultz and her husband, Ronald; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Gertrude Kroells; his twin brother, Dennis Kroells; and sister-in-law Doris Mogensen.
Funeral services took place Monday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, followed by interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Donald Andrix officiated, and Kathy Oelfke was the organist. The Emanuel Lutheran Church Men’s Choir provided special music; “Beautiful Savior,” and “So Nimm Denn Meine Haende.”Congregational hymns: included “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Casket bearers were Louis “Louie” Dammann, Lyle “Ike” Brecht, Derald Feltmann, Gerald Feltmann, Dennis Stuewe, Mike Stuewe, and Gerald “Perry” Smith.
