Zachary R. Kunkel, 22

United States Marine Corps Corporal Zachary Robert Kunkel, age 22, of Camp Pendleton, CA, formerly of Kimball, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, in San Marcos, CA, as a result of a motorcycle accident.

Funeral services will take place Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Annandale. Graveside services will follow at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Assembly Area 2, at 1:45 p.m.

Military honors will be provided by the United States Marine Corps.

Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 29 from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Annandale, and will continue Tuesday, at the church, one hour prior to the service.

Zachary was born Sept. 29, 1992, in St. Cloud, to Timothy and Brenda Kunkel. He grew up in Kimball, and graduated from Dassel Cokato High School with the class of 2011.

In 2012, Zach joined the United States Marine Corps; he served with the 9th Communication Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA.

Zach enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, paintball, riding motorcycle with the ILL RIDERZ Temecula, CA Chapter, playing video games, and spending time in the outdoors.

He is survived by his mother, Brenda Kunkel of St. Joseph; father and step mother, Timothy and Janelle Kunkel of South Haven; sisters Jennifer Mrnak and her husband, Matthew, of Becker, and Ashley Kunkel and her fiancé, Todd Schlangen of St. Augusta; niece Eilidh Mrnak; step siblings Ryan, Tyler, and Hailey Ergen; grandparents Mike Nierengarten of St. Cloud, and Larry and Teresa Kunkel of Kimball; and great-grandmother Vera Knoll of Watkins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Eileen Nierengarten; and great-grandparents Vince and Leona Kunkel, Clem Knoll, Florence Nierengarten, and Ed and Bertha Sinclair.
