Clayton Marvin Mattson, age 87, of Howard Lake, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at Howard Lake Good Samaritan Center.
He was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Waverly, to Clinton and Alice (Bakeberg) Mattson. Clayton grew up on a farm north of Waverly, and was baptized and confirmed at the Swedesburg Lutheran Church in Marysville Township.
He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1945.
Clayton married Muriel Birkholz Oct. 21, 1950, at St. James Lutheran Church of Howard Lake. The couple lived in Buffalo first, and in 1954, bought their farm north of Howard Lake.
Clayton farmed and in 1958, started the well drilling business. In 1968, they built Mattson Well at their present location. Clayton retired about 10 years ago.
He enjoyed wood working, golf, hunting and fishing, and socializing at the Howard Lake American Legion. Most important to Clayton was his family.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel, of Howard Lake; children: Nola (Loyal) Staskivige of Loretto, Deborah Herbst of Delano, Kurt Mattson, and Kent Mattson, both of Howard Lake; grand children Forrest Mattson, Nathan Mattson, Jason Herbst, Amber Gruba Mattson, Stephanie Schuman, David Nettleton; and great-grandchildren Dylan, Kasja, Alexa, Kane, Skylor, Devin, Brandon, and Ethan.
Clayton is further survived by his brothers; Richard. and David; and sister Wanda Gilmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, John.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Howard Lake.
Visitation was Friday, Oct. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Howard Lake; and continued Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Howard Lake handled the arrangements.
