Elaine Mavis Moore, age 90, of Dassel, died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Augustana Health Care Center of Dassel.
She was born June 2, 1924, on the family farm in East Lake Lillian Township, Kandiyohi County, to Christ and Hattie (Hanson) Trygestad. Elaine was baptized at home by the Rev. H.K. Madsen, and confirmed at the Lake Lillian United Methodist Church.
She attended rural school, and graduated from Atwater High School in 1941.
Elaine enlisted in the Women’s Army Corp in July 1944. She completed basic training at Fort Des Moines, IA, then served at Marianna Army Air Field, FL, and Fort Meade, MD.
She attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul campus, majoring in home economics, and graduated in 1951. Elaine was a member of Gamma Omicron Beta and elected to the honor society, Phi Upsilon Omicron, at the university.
She worked as an extension home agent, later returning to the university and majoring in education. Elaine taught home economics to both boys and girls for 12 years at Hector High School.
Elaine also worked as a food supervisor at Shalom Home in St. Paul. When she retired in 1988, she moved to Dassel, and was supervisor at Senior Dining for five years.
Elaine was a member of the Senior Citizen Club, serving as president for several years.
She especially enjoyed cooking, baking, craft work, quilting, and reading. Playing games with her friends and great-grandchildren created many hours of enjoyment and memories.
Elaine is survived by her children: Terry (and Sue) Moore of Dassel, Daniel (and Jeanine) Moore of Cold Spring, and Carol Lundquist of Avon; 10 grandchildren, Heidi (and John) Maki of Hutchinson, Krista (and Jeremy) Cates of Darwin, Paula (and Matt) Salmela of New York City, David Moore of Fargo, ND, Robert Moore of St. Paul, Bradley Moore of Fountain Valley, CA, Joseph Sikkula, Emily Moore, both of Cold Spring, Kathryn Lundquist of Long Prairie, and Lauren Lundquist of Cold Spring; as well as six great-grandchildren, Austin Larson of Litchfield, Zachary, Riley, Braeden and Marlee Cates of Darwin, and Cameron Kusek of Long Prairie.
She is further survived by a sister, Gertrude Hood of Wilmington, DE; and sister-in-law Frances Trygestad of St. Louis Park.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; sister Jeanette (and Vernon) Huebsch; brother Harvey Trygestad of St. Louis Park; and grandchild David Sikkula.
A memorial service took place Sunday, July 13 at 6 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, with the Rev. Keith Carlson officiating. Special music was provided by daughter-in-law Sue Moore, who sang “Precious Lord Take My Hand;” and grandson Bradley Moor, who performed a trombone solo. Teri Orzolek was the pianist, and congregational hymns included “Old Rugged Cross,” “In The Garden,” “Rock of Ages,” and “Softly and Tenderly.”Scripture was read by Elaine’s granddaughter, Lauren Lundquist; and the eulogy was given by her niece, Jackie Huebsch. Grandson David Moore was the urn bearer.
Honorary bearers were Elaine’s grandchildren: Heidi Maki, Krista Cates, Paula Salmela, Robert Moore, Bradley Moore, Joseph Sikkula, Emily Moore, Kathryn Lundquist, and Lauren Lundquist.
There was visitation Sunday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment was Wednesday, July 16 at 1 p.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, with military honors provided by Paul F. Dille American Legion of Dassel.
Arrangements were handled by Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
