James H. Pawelk, 79

US Veteran James Herbert “Jim” Pawelk, age 79, of New Germany, passed away Wednesday Jan. 1, 2014, at the Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

James was born Oct. 7, 1934, in Camden Township, Carver County, the son of Herbert and Erna (Goethke) Pawelk. He was baptized Nov. 4, 1934, at the St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Rolf; and was confirmed in the faith March 21, 1948, at the same church by the Rev. Meyer. His confirmation verse was Proverbs 23, 26.

Jim was united in marriage with Lois M. Mackenthun Dec. 27, 1959, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg by the Rev. Wohlfeil.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Jim was inducted Sept. 4, 1957, and served until his honorable discharge Feb. 20, 1959. He served as a radio teletype operator.

Jim always trusted the Lord for guidance over the years and found comfort in His Word.

He worked for JR Clark, as well as farming part time, which eventually led to full-time farming until 1982. After farming, Jim worked for Super Valu. Following retirement, he had the opportunity to work for Windsong Golf Course a few hours a week.

Jim and Lois enjoyed traveling to Germany, Switzerland, and Hawaii, along with a yearly vacation to Lost Valley Resort. Jim also enjoyed deer hunting, old tyme music, dancing, and especially playing his horn with different bands.

In addition, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; parents Herbert and Erna Pawelk; father-in-law and mother-in-law William and Wilhelmina Mackenthun; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harold and Delores Mackenthun.

He is survived by his loving family: son Kevin Pawelk of New Germany; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Stuart Stahlke of Plato; grandchildren Benjamin and Amanda Stahlke, Shauntel Stahlke, all of Plato; sister and brother-in-law Valeria and Vernon Kuerschner of Elmhurst, IL; and his buddy, Cricket, the cat; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Sunday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church of Hollywood with the Rev. Dean Mahlum officiating. Interment was in St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery in New Germany, with military honors provided by the Glencoe American Legion Post 95.

Visitation was Saturday, Jan. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; and continued Sunday, one-half hour prior to the service at the church.

Casket bearers were Vaughn Kuerschner, Dawn Kuerschner, Timothy Kuerschner, Joel Kuerschner, Diane Mackenthun, Patty Mackenthun, and James Zabel.

Honorary casket bearers were Benjamin Stahlke, Amanda Stahlke, and Shauntel Stahlke.
