John E. Riffe, Sr., age 84, of Paynesville, formerly of Delano, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014.
He was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Delano, to Ernest and Alice (Sturman) Riffe.
John graduated from Delano High School in 1947, and served in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1954.
He married Deanna C. Johnson Aug. 13, 1965, at Delano United Methodist Church. The couple farmed in the Delano, Maple Plain, Browerville, and Sauk Centre areas; and moved to the Paynesville area in 1988.
John was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Oddfellows and Rebekahs, and Paynesville American Legion Post 271.
He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and spending quality time with his family.
John is survived by his children, Jean (Barry) Hazelwood of Topeka, KS; John, Jr. (Jody) of Elk River, and Jody (Paul) Dirckx of St. Cloud; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Deanna, in 2013; a brother, Roger; and a sister, Marilyn Carlson.
Funeral services took place Monday, June 30 at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville, with the Rev. Ric Koehn officiating. Congregational hymns included “Old Rugged Cross,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Rock of Ages.” Interment was in the Manannah Cemetery in Manannah.
Casket bearers were John Riffe Jr., H.O. Carlson, Jesse Sura, Paul Dircks, Barry Hazelwood, and Mike Langmo.
Honorary casket bearers were Danielle Riffe, Rachel Sura, Tyler Riffe, Josh Riffe, Riley Dirckx, and Caleb Dirckx.
Arrangements were handled by Daniel Funeral Homes.
