Gilbert E. Rolf, 94

Gilbert Emil Rolf, age 94, of St. Louis Park, formerly of Lester Prairie, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014.

He was born Aug. 18, 1920, in rural Lester Prairie, the son of August and Meta (Schuette) Rolf. Gilbert was baptized as an infant Sept. 5, 1920, by the Rev. Arthur Spleiss; and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth May 20, 1934, by the Rev. Paul Eckert, both at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.

Gilbert attended school in Lester Prairie until the eighth grade, and then attended Dunwoody Institute.

He entered active duty in the United States Navy Aug. 9, 1942, and served his country during World War II. He received an honorable discharge Dec. 10, 1945.

Gilbert was united in marriage to Evelyn Wenholz Feb. 8, 1947, by the Rev. R. A. Ritz at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Their marriage was blessed with three sons, Jon, Tim, and Daniel.

Gilbert and Evelyn shared over 57 years of marriage together, until Evelyn passed away Dec. 9, 2004.

The couple made their home in Lester Prairie, Edina, and northern Minnesota. In the last years, Gilbert made his home in St. Louis Park.

Gilbert worked as a carpenter for most of his career.

He was a member at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, and of Lester Prairie American Legion Post 463.

Gilbert enjoyed fishing, hunting, planting trees, and visiting and spending time with others. He also loved being a handyman and wood maker.

Gilbert lived for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his sons, Jon Rolf and his wife, Arlene Lovsted, of Minneapolis, Timothy Rolf and his special friend, Tamerin Horstman, of Minneapolis, and Daniel Rolf of Grapevine, TX; grandchildren Jason Rolf and his wife, Isle, Caitlin Rolf, and Ava Rolf; great-grandchildren Titus Holloway, Ian Rolf, and Nissa Rolf; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn, Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, August and Meta Rolf; brothers Fred Rolf and his wife, Agnes, Bill Rolf and his wife, Agnes, Harold Rolf, Howard Rolf, Ben Rolf and his first wife, Janelle and his second wife, Louise; sisters Irene Schmalz and her husband, Andy, Frieda Rolf, Louise Moenke and her husband, Wilbert, and Rosella Rolf.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with interment in the church cemetery.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Paul-McBride Chapel in Lester Prairie, and continued Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the services.

Arrangements were with the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie.
