Leon Schumacher, age 74, of Eden Valley, formerly of Loretto, died Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the St. Cloud Hospital with his family at his side.
He was born March 11, 1940, in Minneapolis, to Alexander Peter and Agnes Ann (Klaers) Schumacher.
Leon started farming right after graduating from St. Michael High School in 1959.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963.
Leon married Rosemarie Blue June 15, 1963, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Loretto. He and Rose farmed in Loretto, until moving to the Eden Valley area in 2004.
Leon also worked as a electrician for Wright Electric.
He was a past member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Loretto, where he served on the parish council. Leon was currently a member of the Church of Our Lady in Manannah.
Leon was also a member of the Eden Valley American Legion, and Catholic United Financial.
He was a retired member of the Loretto Fire Department.
When living in Loretto, Leon was active in the community, volunteering as a hockey coach, and serving on the athletic association board and school board. He always enjoyed going to athletic activities.
Leon enjoyed spending time with family, taking Rose out for dinner and dancing, eating, and spending time with family on camping trips.
A hard-working family man, he made work enjoyable for everyone.
Leon is survived by his wife, Rose, of Eden Valley; children Terese (Paul) Swearingen of Buffalo, Dan (Sheri) of Eden Valley, Rich (Shawn) of Prior Lake, Joseph (Mary) of Annandale, Jeff (Jennifer) of Howard Lake, Mary (Dan) Russek of Annandale, Edwin (John) of Minneapolis, Robert (Kelli) of Loretto, Charlie (Jackie) of New Hope, Marty (Jennifer) of Hanover, and Andy (Sarah) of Annandale; sister, Rosemary (Roy) Spurzem; and brother, Ed (Mary) Schumacher, both of Loretto; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Helen Wilson.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Our Lady in Manannah with the Rev. Joseph Steinbeisser and Msgr. Francis Garvey officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Friends and relatives called Friday, Aug. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church, with parish prayers at 8 p.m.; and also Saturday, one hour prior to the Mass.
Arrangements were entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Eden Valley.
