Harold J. Schurmann Obituary – 2/20/2014


Harold John Schurmann, age 80, of Frazee, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at his residence, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

He was born Feb. 11, 1934, in Dupree, SD, to John and Pauline (Boeckman) Schurmann.The family lived on a farm near Eagle Butte, SD, where Harold attended a little country school near their home.

In 1946, the family moved to a dairy farm near New Germany. Harold attended the seventh and eighth grade in Winsted, at Holy Trinity School.

In 1955, Harold joined the Army, and served in Germany for 15 months. His high school diploma was achieved in Germany while in the service.

Harold married Betty Hausladen in 1957, and of this union, three children were born, Bruce, Brian, and Barbara. Unfortunately, Barbara passed away after only 12 hours. About a year later, baby daughter Brenda was adopted.

After 20 years of marriage, Harold and Betty divorced.

Harold married Luella Skogen in 1978.

Harold’s careers consisted of working for Millerbernd Manufacturing and Sterner Industries, each for five years. During this time, he attended Dunwoody Institute to earn welding and machine shop certifications.

He then went to Minneapolis to work for Industrial Metal Products, which became Elanco, and then Accraply. Harold spent 28 years working there as a machinist and also in purchasing, until 1995, when he retired to his lake place in Park Rapids.

Harold and Lu became snow birds and winter Texans, from 1997 to 2002. In June 2002, they moved to Frazee.

Luella passed away in January 2009.

Harold was fortunate enough to meet the love of his life in 2010, and married Patricia (Gibson) Schurmann Feb. 26, 2011. We all fell in love following their fairy tale love for each other. They loved to dance, travel, and just be with each other.

Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and dancing. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus (4th Degree), and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two sons, Bruce Schurmann, of Hudson, WI; and Brian Schurmann, of St. Michael; one daughter, Brenda (Gary) Miller, of Minneapolis; three grandchildren, Theresa (Bob) Linder, of Hudson, WI, Travis Schurmann, of Norwood Young America, and Kaitlyn Schurmann, of Andover; two great-grandchildren, Addison and Reagan Linder; one brother, Robert Schurmann, of New Germany; and two sisters, Alice Hausladen of New Germany, and Geraldine (Glenn) Pysick, of Watertown.

Harold is further survived by Pat’s children; Shane (Bev) Gibson, of Fargo, ND; Maria (Arlen) Klamm, of Sioux Falls, SD; Troy (Jill) Gibson, of Byron, and Laura (Jeremy) Williams, of Thief River Falls; and 13 step grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, Luella, and his infant daughter, Barbara; he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille; brother, Lawrence; and his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial: took place Saturday March 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee. Interment was at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Detroit Lakes.

Visitation was Friday, Feb. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee, with a KC rosary at 6:30 p.m., and parish prayers at 7 p.m.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the West-Kjos Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes.
