Inez Jane Settergren, age 89, of Hutchinson, formerly of Ellsworth Township, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, at the Augustana Lakeside Health Care Center in Dassel.
She was born Aug. 13, 1924, north of Hutchinson, the daughter of William J. and Alice (Paulson) Forsberg. Inez was baptized in Otter Lake by the Rev. Kennington in 1939.
She grew up in the Hutchinson area, and attended school in Hutchinson, graduating in 1942.
Inez was united in marriage to Walter E. Settergren of rural Dassel, Jan. 23, 1943, at the Franklin Street Baptist Church in Hutchinson by the Rev. Edward Pennington. This marriage was blessed with four children, William, Wayne, Elna and Kathryn.
Inez and Walter made their home in rural Dassel for seven years, until they purchased a farm in Ellsworth Township, rural Darwin in October 1949. They shared 54 years of marriage until Walter passed away March 29, 1997.
In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, Inez was partner in the farming operation, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of Lake Jennie Covenant Church in Dassel.
Inez was also a member of the Collinwood Stitch and Chatter Club for over 60 years, and the Ellsworth Kitchenettes Home Extension Study Group for over 50 years.
Inez and Walter began a journey to compile their family history in 1971, even traveling to the west coast. Inez took classes to learn how to create genealogy records, and complied volumes! She enjoyed record keeping for the family business, crafts, playing games, tending to her gardens, and baking. Inez had a great love for family reunions, and especially cherished playing games with her family, grandchildren, and friends.
Inez is survived by her children, William Settergren and his wife, Sylvia of Darwin, Wayne Settergren and his wife, Betty of Moorhead, Elna McCutchen and her husband, Dennis of Hutchinson, and Kathryn Koenig and her fiancé, Richard Dustin of Bolder, MT; grandchildren Kevin Settergren and special friend, Deb, Kenneth Settergren and his wife, Carman, Richard Settergren and his wife, Jean, Jamie Settergren and his fiancée Deb, Kari Wayman and her husband, Mike, Neal Settergren and his wife, Terri, Joseph Vacek and his wife Nikki, Jennifer Rosenau and her husband, John, Charles Vacek and his wife, Erin, Mary Grack and her husband, Tony, Christine Lofgren and her husband, LeRoy, David Vacek and his fiancée, Rachel, Melissa Vacek and her fiancé, Cullen, Christopher Koenig, Bryan Koenig and his wife, Crystal; step-grandsons, Jeremy McCutchen, Keith and his wife, Jessica; soon-to-be 40 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She is further survived by a sister, Doris Christensen and her husband, George of Bloomington; brother Donald Forsberg and Ramona Lindquist of Osseo; sisters-in-law Stella Forsberg of Rancho Cordova, CA, Lorraine Settergren of Litchfield, and Doris Settergren of Dassel; brother-in-law Charles Baumetz of Dallas, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her husband, Walter, Inez was preceded in death by her parents, William and Alice Forsberg; brother Bernard Forsberg; son-in-law Lee Koenig; parents-in-law, Peter “PJ” and Alma Settergren; in-laws Alice Sorenson and her husband, Walter, Hilma Uttergberg and her husband, Lex, Herman Settergren and his wife, Doris, Melville, Paul, Robert, Harry ,and Roy Settergren, Mildred Anderson and her husband, Joseph, Hazel Carlson and her husband, Ron, and Irene Baumetz.
A celebration of Inez’ life took place Friday, July 11 at 3 p.m. at Shalom Baptist Church in Hutchinson, followed by interment in the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Visitation was Thursday, July 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dobratz-Hantge Chapel in Hutchinson, and continued Saturday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
