Donald Elroy Tonsberg, age 71, of Glenwood, formerly of Howard Lake, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
He was born April 10, 1943, in Howard Lake, to Theodore and Esther (Scott) Tonsberg. Don grew up, and learned to be a hard worker, on the family farm in Wright County, along with his siblings; Marlyn, Doris, Roger, and Jeanette.
Don served in the United States Army as a military police officer in Vietnam, Japan, and Washington DC. He was honorably discharged Jan. 31, 1969.
After attending college at Mankato State University, Don took a job in the automotive industry, and later became a skilled auto body repair man.
His marriage of almost 10 years to Sharon (Dembovsky) yielded the birth of his cherished baby girl, April Treasure, whom he affectionate referred to as his “princess.”
Don’s daughter and stepchildren appreciated the valuable life skills he taught them in the areas of home repair, automotive work, and driving, as well as playing chess. He will also be remembered for giving them little “projects” to do.
Don enjoyed watching wildlife, and feeding the deer and wild turkeys, as well as cruising around in his car, or later, on his electric wheelchair.
He was an avid golfer, engaging in competition as a semi-pro on many courses throughout the US. He proudly attained the ultimate “hole in one” on the Cokato Golf Course.
Don was loved, and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his daughter, April (Daryl) Harth of Glenwood; sisters Jeanette (Leroy) Entinger of Winsted, and Doris Rodd of Mound; brother Roger Tonsberg of Howard Lake; sister-in-law Delores Czech Tonsberg of Maple Plain; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents;, his sister, Doris Marjorie; brother Marlyn; and brother-in-law Charles Rodd.
A memorial service took place Wednesday, Nov. 19 in Glenwood.
