Duane ‘Duke’ Weibel Obituary – 7/27/2014


Duane “Duke” George Weibel, age 77, of rural Waverly, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014, at The Garden House of St. Mary’s in Winsted.

He was born Aug. 2, 1936, at the family home in Winsted, the oldest of six children born to George and Edna (Mielke) Weibel. Duane was baptized at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake by the Rev. C.H. Seltz Aug. 28, 1936.

He was instructed in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winsted May 28, 1950, by the Rev. A. F. Vomhoff, at which time he was given his confirmation verse of Luke 11: 28, “But Jesus answered, “Rather, how happy are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”

Duane attended Winsted Public School, Dutch Lake Grade School, and Howard Lake High School, from which he graduated in 1954.

He was united in marriage with Jane Barfnecht July 27, 1957, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Watertown, by the Rev. Louis Wetzel. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters and two sons.

Throughout their married life, Duane and Jane have spent their time in the Winsted area, and were members of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted.

Duane enjoyed being on the farm and driving truck, which he did for many years. He also enjoyed his family and visiting with people.

He is survived by his children: Robin Weibel, Randy Weibel (special friend Rhonda Schroeder), all of Winsted, Renee (Mike) Salonek of Montrose, and Ron (Bobbi) Weibel of Cokato; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Jerome “ Jerry” (Mary Lou) Weibel of Fayetteville, GA; a sister, Barb (Ken) Rosin of Gaylord; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Joan (Ken) Moy of Mayer, Eugene (Donna) Barfnecht, Don (Mary) Barfnecht, all of Watertown, and Dale (Betty) Barfnecht of Mayer; as well as other relatives and friends.

Duane was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jane Weibel, July 3, 2014; his parents, George and Edna Weibel; three sisters: Marian Schultz, Donna Preston, and Karen Dallmann; father-in-law and mother-in-law Walter and Violet Barfnecht; a sister-in-law, Janice Barfnecht; a niece, Ronda Gadbow; and by two nephews: Brett Weibel and Darwin Barfnecht.

A memorial service took place Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winsted with the Rev., Mark Loder officiating. Molly Loder was the organist, and inurnment followed at the Winsted Public Cemetery.

Visitation was Friday, Aug. 1 from 4 to 8 p .m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and continued Saturday morning, at the church, one hour prior to the services.

Honorary bearers were Jesse and Jeremy Wemhoff, Melissa Forcier, Nick and Matt Salonek, Amanda Weibel, and Kailee and Brittany Leinonen.

Urn bearers were Adam Stifter and Lauren Salonek.
