Leona Wroge Obituary – 2/14/2014


Leona Sophia Freidericka (Kruschke) Wroge, age 100, of Lester Prairie, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

She was born July 10, 1913, at her home in Bergen Township, McLeod County, the daughter of Henry and Augusta (Machemehl) Kruschke. Leona was baptized as an infant July 27, 1913, by the Rev. J. A. Schest; and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth May 27, 1927, by the Rev. Walter Baumhoefener, both at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bergen Township, McLeod County. Her guiding confirmation passage was Psalms 86:11.

Leona was united in marriage to Arthur “Art” Henry Wroge May 18, 1932, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bergen Township, McLeod County.

Leona and Art made their home in Plato and Lester Prairie. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Marlys, Norma, Roger, LuAnn, and Phyllis.

Art and Leona shared over 47 years of marriage before Art passed away Nov. 11, 1979.

In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, Leona farmed with Art on a farm south of Plato. In 1963, Leona and Art purchased and operated the Lester Prairie Bakery until 1977, when they retired.

Leona was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, serving in the ladies aid and quilting.

She loved numerous activities, and belonged to several bowling leagues, bowling until the age of 93. Leona also enjoyed visiting, playing cards and Yahtzee, fishing, and any activity that kept her young and witty.

Leona cherished the time spent with her beloved family and friends.

When Leona needed assistance with her daily care she became a resident at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care in Glencoe Dec. 23, 2013.

She is survived by her children, Norma Jaus and her husband, Eddie, of Hamburg, Roger Wroge and his wife, Kristie, of Luck, WI; LuAnn Mueller of Hutchinson, and Phyllis Marth and her husband, Jerry, of Gaylord; 20 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 33 great-great-grandchildren.

Leona is further survived by her sisters, Lorna Wilkins, Luella Prehn, and Eldora Miller; sisters-in-law Esther Wroge, Laverna Wroge, and Barb Wroge; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

In addition to her husband, Arthur, Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Augusta Kruschke; a daughter, Marlys Mackenthun and her husband, Hillard; son-in-law LeRoy Mueller; grandchild Janet (Mackenthun) Basil; great-grandchild, Zachery Tracy; a brother, Harold; a sister, Marilyn; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, followed by interment at the church cemetery. The Rev. James Gomez officiated at the services. Cheryl Andrix was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Jesus Savior Pilot Me,” “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” and “The Lord Is My Shepherd I’ll Not Want.”

Casket bearers were Rick Ziegler, Rod Jaus, Steve Jaus, Mark Wroge, Leigh Mueller, and Jason Dahlke.

Leona’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were honorary casket bearers.
