Verna M. Barlau, age 91, of Cologne, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at the Auburn Home in Waconia.
She was born June 25, 1924, in Waconia Township, the daughter of Fred and Lydia (Neumann) Vollrath. Verna was baptized July 27, 1924, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer, by the Rev. F.W. Erthal; and confirmed April 10, 1938, at the same church by the Rev. Elmer Schwandt.
Verna was united in marriage to Elmer A. Barlau April 30, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer.
Verna loved being outside, tending to her vegetable and flower gardens, raising her chickens, and selling their eggs. Quilting was a big part of her life, and she made a quilt for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also quilted with other women at her church.
Verna belonged to the local senior citizens’ group, taking in all of the activities. She treasured the times she and Elmer took bus trips to the Black Hills, Canada, and various other destinations.
Throughout her life, Verna collected a number of different salt and pepper shakers. When you walked through the door at the Barlau home, you could always smell the delicious meals Verna was preparing, with everything being made from scratch.
A caregiver to many of her family members throughout her life, Verna helped out whenever it was needed.
She was fond of her cats, and enjoyed watching the birds on a daily basis.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents. Fred and Lydia Vollrath; son-in-law Kenneth Thaemert; and brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Vera Vollrath.
She is survived by her loving family: husband Elmer; children James (Carol) Barlau of Plato, Linda Thaemert, and Lynette (Terry) Rettig, all of Cologne, Carol Barlau and special friend Blaine Halvorson of Overland Park, KS, and John Barlau of Waconia; grandchildren Carrie (Dan) Feltmann, Kelly (Jimmy) Buesgens, Dan (Kathy) Thaemert, Jason (Kim) Thaemert, Stephanie (Tommy) Otto, Michelle (Rod) Davila, and Christopher (Elinor) Rettig; and great-grandchildren Danielle, Megan, Timothy and Ryan Feltmann, Lucy and Lincoln Buesgens, Lauren, Paige and Erin Thaemert, Brandon Legg, Kallie and Jaydon Thaemert, McKayla Rettig, and Dominic Davila.
Verna is further survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Evelyn Vollrath of Mayer; a niece; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer, with the Rev. Adam Gless officiating. There was visitation at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment was at Crow River Cemetery in New Germany.
Verna’s grandchildren were her casket bearers: Carrie Feltmann, Kelly Buesgens, Dan Thaemert, Jason Thaemert, Stephanie Otto, Michelle Davila, and Christopher Rettig.
