Dorothy Jean (Bauman) Griep, “Gram,” age 79, of Marathon, NY, formerly of Delano, passed away Friday, July 17, 2015, at her home.
She was born April 1, 1936, and raised in Delano.
Dorothy was an active member of the Catholic Community of St. Stephen’s and St. Patrick’s in Marathon, NY. She served as director of religious education for many years, and as a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, holding offices of president and vice president, In addition, she volunteered countless hours at St. Stephen’s Church.
Many young people of the community were children in Grandma Griep’s Day Care. They were cared for just like her own, with love; and the love was returned to her from these now young adults, to whom she is still referred to as Grandma Griep.
Dorothy loved to sew. She made quilts, dresses, and prom gowns, and altered clothing for many. She spent numerous hours with the high school drama club and community players creating costumes and donating many props to stage sets.
Dorothy was also a writer. Her favorites were poetry of family situations and comedy. She was published in the 1996 Library of Poetry, into the Unknown Edition.
Dorothy settled in Marathon, NY in 1975, after previously living with her family in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Texas.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Gerald Griep; 11 children: Mary (Don) Bliss, John (Denise), Michael (Nancy), James (Roxanne), Mark (Christine), Stephen (Jean), Peter (Janette), Richard (Sandy), Margaret (Jason) Szondy, Chad, and Katie (Jon) Moffitt; along with 33 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is further survived by brothers Lawrence (Annie), Robert (Helen), Stephen (Darlene), and Anthony; sisters Catherine Bauer, Rita Schmitz, Caroline Metz, and Rosemary Gillis; sisters-in-law Marcella (Joseph) Bauman, Judy (Clarence) Stein, and Karen (David) Lenz; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd (Pat) Griep.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Catherine and Herbert Bauman; her brothers, Joseph, John and Clarence Bauman; a grandson, Isaac Szondy; brothers-in-law Daniel Bauer, Peter Schmitz, William Metz, and Jack Gillis; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia (John) Bauman, and Jean (Anthony) Bauman.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Marathon, NY, with the Revs. Lester Smith and Douglas Cunningham as celebrants. Interment was in Marathon Cemetery.
