Verna P. Johnson, age 92, of Watertown, formerly of Slayton, passed away peacefully with family present Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown. Interment with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred.
Arrangements are with the Iten’s Watertown Funeral Home.
Verna was born Aug. 6, 1922, on the family farm near Gully, MN, to John and Nellie (Melbo) Halvorson.
She graduated from Fosston High School.
Verna served as a nurse in the US Army from 1944 to 1946, stationed at Rhoads General Hospital (Utica, NY) and Walter Reed Medical Center (Washington, DC). After discharge, she served in the Reserves and was called back into service from 1950 to 1951, stationed at Fitzsimons Army Hospital (Denver, CO).
After completing her army duties, Verna returned to Slayton, where she worked as an registered nurse at Murray County Memorial Hospital for about 32 years.
Verna was united in marriage to Edgar W. Johnson Sept. 26, 1952, in St. Paul.
They made their home in Slayton, where Verna was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church; served for 21 years as service and education chairman of the Murray County Cancer Society; and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Ervin March Unit 64 of Slayton for 61 years.
Verna moved to Watertown in 2007, to live with her daughter, Diane. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Verna enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar; parents; and siblings Howard Halvorson and Myrtle Halverson.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Diane Johnson; sister Stella Halvorson; brother Norman Halvorson; sister-in-law Joann Halvorson; and several nieces and nephews.
