Irene E. Jopp, age 97, of Mayer, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015, at the Elim Home in Watertown.

She was born Feb. 9, 1918, in St. Bonifacius, the daughter of Paul and Louise (Hasse) Schwalbe. Irene was baptized March 17, 1918, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia by the Rev. Wm. Schneider; and confirmed June 25, 1933 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown by the Rev. M. LeVander.

Irene graduated from high school and was salutatorian of her class. She worked at Zeyer Hotel in Watertown.

She was united in marriage to Alden Jopp Aug.14, 1940, at St. John Lutheran Church, Hollywood Township, New Germany, by the Rev. Elmer Schwandt.

After Irene married Alden, she began her life as a farmer’s wife, and also worked at Tonka Toys until her retirement.

She was very active in her church, participating in the Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.

Irene had a large garden and enjoyed the harvest that it produced. Some of the other activities she enjoyed were quilting, embroidery work, reading, travel, and sports.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alden Jopp; parents Paul and Louise Schwalbe; a granddaughter in infancy; grandson Ryan Pettit; sisters and brothers-in-law Loretta and Vernon Jopp, and Anita and Wilbur Zastrow; brother and sister-in-law Hilton and Lyla Schwalbe; and sister-in-law and brothers-in-law Lorraine Schwalbe, Roy Ketcher, and Wallace Jopp.

Irene is survived by her loving family: sons Dale (Charlotte) Jopp, Dean (Paulette) Jopp, all of Mayer, and Dennis (Nadine) Jopp of Maple Lake; daughter Lynette (Jerry) Pettit of Hemet, CA; grandchildren Kimberly Kelley, Dawn (Tom) Clemensen, Michelle Lyzhoft, Todd (Betty) Jopp, Nichole (Corey) Jopp-Norcutt, Nathan (Kim) Jopp, Tracy (Shawn) Bates, David (Christa) Jopp, Timothy (Jill) Jopp, A’ndrea (Jake) Rasdall; great-grandchildren Jeremy, Andria, Angela, Jamie, Tanya, Amanda, Michael, Matthew, Casondra, Patrick, Joshua, Jeremiah, Karissa, Cory, Kelsie, Symone, Abram, Elijah, Samuel, Adler, Taylor, Braeden, Tristan, Cash, Kensington, Cooper, Ryann, Lauren, Makenna, Emmery, and Abram; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She is further survived by a sister, Verna Ketcher of Rockford, IL; a brother, Harold Schwalbe of Waconia; a sister-in-law, Bernett Jopp of Mayer; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Saturday, Aug. 22 at noon at St. John Lutheran Church, Hollywood Twp., New Germany, with the Rev. Dean Mahlum officiating. There was visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

Irene’s grandchildren, Kimberly Kelley, Todd Jopp, David Jopp, Timothy Jopp, Nathan Jopp, and A’ndrea Pettit were her casket bearers.

Honorary casket bearers were granddaughters Dawn Clemensen, Michelle Lyzhoft, Tracy Bates, and Nichole Jopp-Norcutt.
